My Writing Coach Online offers comprehensive writing courses, individualized tutoring, and online workshops for middle school to high school students. Customized classes are available. Our Services: Online Writing Classes COMING SOON! We believe that the best teaching is delivered simply. If you can e-mail, you can participate in our classes. Weekly lessons are emailed to you. Complete the assignments and email your work back for evaluation. Mrs. Deb is available throughout the week to answer questions or to provide additional feedback or help via email, online chat, or telephone. Students have the opportunity to publish their work for an audience (other students) and to have the chance to read other student writing through our online community. After registration and payment, students can begin the course whenever they are ready and complete each lesson at their own pace. There is no time limit for completion, but most students who send assignments on a weekly basis complete a course in 3 to 4 months. Each course consists of 12-15 lessons. How is an online class different from a live class? In a live class meeting, you attend class at a specified time, your teacher gives a lecture, assigns an in-class exercise and/or a take-home writing assignment, and reviews student writing. If you are unable to attend class, then you do not receive the benefit of that day's class, and you can fall behind in your work. In an online class, you can read the teacher's lecture any time during the week, whatever works with your schedule. The same goes for the writing exercise, which you can do anytime within the week. Online classes provide for personal interaction, just like live classes, but your mom doesn’t have to drive you around town! What about grades? My Writing Coach Online does not provide traditional grades. Students receive in-depth feedback on their work, as well as a Six Traits Assessment for each written assignment. This assessment provides the most complete feedback for your child. It can be easily converted to a grade for your child’s transcript. Feel free to ask for help in determining your child’s grade. What is the 6-traits writing assessment? We look at the following areas and assign a score for each. This is the best way to show a student where he or she needs help or improvement. Ideas: The content, or main theme, can be looked at as the heart of the message Organization: The internal structure of the writing. Voice: The personal voice of author comes through. This gives a sense of a real person speaking. Word Choice: The use of precise, colorful and rich words to communicate. Sentence Fluency: The writing flows together often with a rhythm or cadence. Conventions: Mechanical correctness, including spelling and grammar. About our Curriculum: We use a custom curriculum, developed by Deb Evans. Deb has studied The Lost Tools of Writing and Teaching Writing Structure & Style, as well as obtained the experience and skills developed from years of working as a writer, as well as teaching writing at the elementary, junior and senior high levels.
