New Expressive Arts Guild for Teens

My new Right Brain Classes are off to a wonderful start, so it’s time to kick off my new Expressive Arts Guild from Deb Evans.

Expressive Arts is a service-oriented, membership guild for photographers and writers. I have several special projects that I want us to work on as a group to ‘MAKE YOUR ART MEANINGFUL!” Details on Expressive Arts are online at www.expressiveartsonline.com. I have also created a Ning Network at www.expressiveteens.ning.com . This is a private web site for EA members only, so if you decide to join us, let me know and I will send you an invite. This site will be our online headquarters for our projects and activities.

Expressive Arts is open to EVERYBODY, 12 years and older. It is FREE to participate in our group. We will only be as good as our membership, so I ask that if you join, you commit to participating with us throughout the year. We will have a face-to-face meeting once a month on the 2nd Monday of the month. We will have at least one field trip per month. Other activities and meetings will be scheduled as needed to complete our projects.

Please note our upcoming events:

Monday, September 13, 1:3O-2:55 pm: Our first membership meeting. Join us in discussing/sharing ideas and planning some of our project details. All meetings will be held at the Homeschool House in The Woodlands. Meetings take place during our regular Photography class time. Please bring $3 for pizza and drinks.

Saturday, September 25th, 1-4 pm: Our first field trip will be to the classic car show at Old Town Spring. Bring your camera and/or notebook to take notes on the activities. We will be practicing documentary photography and journalistic writing.

Thursday, October 7th, 2:3O-4:3O pm: Field trip to Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Specifically, we will be viewing the Dance with Camera exhibit.  http://www.camh.org/exhib_MAIN.html

Please note that Expressive Arts is a separate organization from SuperFriends!, although there is some overlap in membership and activites. SuperFriends! is social; Expressive Arts is service-oriented, but will have a social aspect as well [because we just like to have fun in whatever we do!]. For more info on SuperFriends!, visit http://superfriendsteens.blogspot.com.

Third Annual Worldwide Photo Walk – Local Walk Planned in Conroe

Third Annual Worldwide Photo Walk – Local Walk Planned in Conroe

Event Hailed as the Largest Global Social Event for Photographers

CONROE, TX – On Saturday, July 24, 2010, the whole world will be walking again with the Third Annual Worldwide Photo Walk™, the world’s largest global social photography event in the history of photography itself. It takes place on the same day around the world where photographers of all walks of life and skill levels gather together, usually in downtown areas to socialize, learn new tips from each other, and explore their corner of the world through photography.

Local pro photographer and teacher Deb Evans will be leading the Conroe leg of the more than 1,000 walks planned for that day.

“I have led photo walks around Conroe and The Woodlands for years, but this is my first time to lead a worldwide walk,” Evans said. “I’m thrilled to be selected for this honor. Photo walks are always fun for the participants, and we have a lot of great ideas to make this one special, including giving our photographers  the opportunity to submit their photographs for possible inclusion in an upcoming local museum exhibit celebrating Conroe.”

The walk will begin at the historic Crighton Theater at 4 pm. Participants will walk the downtown square, photographing anything and everything that appeals to them, sharing ideas and insights. Walkers will have inside access to the Conroe railroad junction – future site of a proposed railroad museum.  Other activities/surprises are being planned for the participants. The walk will end at a downtown Conroe restaurant where photographers can share their photos and thoughts about the day.  The walk is scheduled to be finished by 7 pm.

Anyone can participate in the photo walk: students, pros, amateurs, hobbyists, adults, teens, etc. Any camera will do! Walkers can use anything from camera phones to high-end SLRs.

There is no fee to participate but pre-registration is required. Just go to the Worldwide Photo Walk site [www.worldwidephotowalk.com, search for Conroe, Texas] and sign up.

“Photography is usually viewed as a solitary activity, but people love to shoot together, compare notes and just have fun with photography,” said Scott Kelby, founder of the Worldwide Photo Walk. “The Worldwide Photo Walk is a social phenomenon. It’s the joy of shooting with friends, new and old that makes this event so special.”

The social aspect of this event has also transcended into the online world of social networks as well. Participants in the Worldwide Photo Walk post updates to Twitter before, during and after the event under the #WWPW hash tag, they share their pictures on Flickr (view pictures from last year’s Flickr group), and get updates from NAPP via its Facebook page.

In addition to enjoying a day of photography with other like-minded individuals, participants may also be eligible to win prizes from the Worldwide Photo Walk’s sponsors if their photo is chosen as the best photo of the day by their walk leader. Each winning walk photo is then entered into a global competition where Scott Kelby picks the single “best photo” of the event along with 10 runners-up. Full details are available at: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/

Walk leader Deb Evans has been a professional photographer for eight years and is the owner of Deb Evans Photography. She also teaches photography and writing classes through her business Right Brain Classes.

Learn Photography from a Pro Photographer

Learn Photography from a Pro Photographer…

I’m Deb Evans.  I have been homeschooling my two girls for ten years. I’ve been a professional photographer about as long, owing my own photography business since ‘O3. I’ve been teaching photography to children, teens, and adults for most of that time as well. Photography is one of my favorite things and sharing that love with others is a great feeling. My students discover and/or nurture a great hobby that will last a lifetime. I’m proud to know that many of my students have been seriously bitten by the “shutterbug” – going on to win contests, seek careers in photography, or seriously sparking their own love of the art. My website at http://www.debevans.com/photoclass.htm has great comments from some of my former students and their parents.

There are several upcoming opportunities for your kids [and even you] to learn photography from me:

PHOTOGRAPHY SUMMER FUNCAMPSLast call for our June 15-18th camp. I can still squeeze another student in; otherwise, plan for the July 12th-15th class. Visit www.debsclasses.com for registration details.

FALL/SPRING PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS – 1O years +. www.debsclasses.com We will have a beginners class on Wednesdays and an advanced class for 12 years + on Mondays. To register for the advanced class, you must have previously taken one of my photography classes and/or pass an exam on the basics. If you take one of my summer camps, you will be allowed to enroll in the advanced class. The advanced class is for students who are serious about learning and improving their photography skills. The beginner class is for students who just want to cover the basics and have some fun with their cameras.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS GUILD – This is a brand new photography / writing guild for teens and young adults. Members will have numerous opportunities to practice and improve their photography skills while participating in service projects that make their art meaningful. Visit www.expressiveartsonline.com for details. Our next field trip is Friday, June 18th.

ONLINE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS – I am finally finishing up this great online course and will be publishing shortly. Good for preteen to adult.

Class of 2010 – Senior Portraits

This is one of my favorite sessions – it was part 2. We did a session with her prom dress last month. I loved this session because Amanda is so sweet and fun. She’s also gorgeous! Because it was her 2nd session, I think she was more comfortable with me. She was more relaxed and seemed to have more fun. We shot in downtown Conroe, and I loved all of the background options that we had to play with. She’s graduating on June 5th. Congratulations!
